Aliyev says Armenian nuclear plant threatens region

The Armenian Metsamor nuclear power plant presents a serious threat to regional security, President Ilham Aliyev told IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano in The Hague, the presidential website reported on Monday.

Aliyev touched upon the importance of nuclear security for Azerbaijan, the region and the world at large.

The operation of the Metsamor NPP, which is located in a seismically unstable zone of Armenia and fails to meet modern standards, jeopardizes the security of the entire region, he said.

Amano said the IAEA and Azerbaijan had good cooperation potential and noted the reliability of nuclear security partnership with Baku.
