Rare cosmic alignment 'heralds 3 Days of Darkness and End of Days'
Five planets – Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Mars and Jupiter – are visible in the night sky at the moment for the first time in a decade.

Amateur stargazers, UFO hunters and so-called "truthers" have taken to the internet to warn the spectacular concurrence fulfils an ancient prophecy and heralds the coming End of Days.

They have predicted the astral alignment could magnify the gravitational pull of planets and trigger earthquakes, tidal waves – and even an apocalyptic polar shift – on Earth.

Doomsdayers – such as the "Truthernews" website – claim that the lunar calendar, the rare planetary alignment and "events in the news" suggested the long-fabled "Three Days of Darkness" were about to happen.

Many Roman Catholic saints, seers and mystics – including Saint Hildegard, Pio of Pietrelcina, Anna Maria Taigi and most recently Marie Julie Jahenny – have prophesied that the world will be plunged into three days of darkness before Armageddon.

Jahenny – known as the "Breton Stigmatist" – was a Frenchwoman who died in 1941.

She predicted numerous disasters that would befall France and the rest of the world – including earthquakes, plagues and failed harvests – as well as the coming of the Antichrist.

The mystic warned all hell would break loose at the Three Days of Darkness with demons killing anyone who leaves the house.

Interestingly, she predicted the Three Days of Darkness would be on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The final day of the record 31-day concurrence of the five planets will fall on Saturday, February 20.

She also said the they would commence as the days were "beginning to increase".

The days are getting longer at the moment as we head towards spring.

The alignment of the Earth, Moon and Sun is enough to spark large "spring" tides on Earth.

But NASA has denied planetary alignment has much effect on Earth.

A spokesman said: "Even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible.

"One major alignment occurred in 1962, for example, and two others happened during 1982 and 2000.

"Each December the Earth and Sun align with the approximate centre of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence."

At least 11 people have died after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake rocked Taiwan on Friday night – but earthquakes happen regularly all over the world so it is unsurprising one would occur during the alignment.

An asteroid is due to skim past Earth shortly after the alignment – on March 4 – but again they are regular occurrences.

Other conspiracy theorists believe the newly discovered Planet Nine is the giant hidden planet Nibiru – which they claim will strike or skim past Earth, wiping out humanity, later this year.

Some part-time soothsayers foretold the Three Days would begin on January 28 – which obviously passed without note.

But we will have to wait until the end of the alignment before we know for sure.
